It is usually very easy to identify if your baby is allergic to eggs. The typical symptoms that manifest themselves within minutes are:
– Nausea followed by vomiting and subsequently diarrhea.
– Blocked or a runny nose, watery eyes and incessant sneezing
– Irritated throat and itchy mouth.
– Hives around your baby’s nose, mouth or eyes, which may have the propensity to spread across his or her body
– Mild swelling of his face including eyes and lips.
Allergic Reaction to Eggs in Babies
In case your baby has a more severe reaction to eggs, then the symptoms will be your baby wheezing while breathing, tongue and throat swelling, and a sudden drop in your baby’s blood pressure.
This reaction, better known as anaphylactic shock or anaphylaxis is life threatening. However, such serious reactions are extremely rare.
In the event you suspect your baby is having such an extreme allergic reaction, then if you have been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector pen, you must use it immediately on your baby and call an ambulance and rush to the nearest hospital.
Under no circumstances should you try to induce vomiting in your baby.
Allergy Testing for Babies
How to conclusively identify that your baby has an egg allergy?
Take your baby to your family doctor and describe the symptoms to him and what your baby had consumed and touched before the symptoms appeared.
Your doctor will prescribe an allergy test, typically a test known as an IgE allergy test.
This test is a blood test which measures the levels of specific antibodies in your baby’s blood and is useful in detecting the majority of cases of egg allergies in babies.
Egg Allergy in Babies Treatment
1) Rinse out your baby’s mouth and wash off his or her skin. This is helpful in reducing skin symptoms in case the allergic reaction was caused by a contact allergy.
2) Take some hydrocortisone cream and apply it directly to any rashes or hives which reduce inflammation and itching and is useful in the prevention of worsening of symptoms.
3) Give your baby some antihistamine medication orally, which are typically available over the counter.
In case your family doctor has given a prescription for oral medication or any specific instructions regarding the dosage and the type of medication to be used, then follow those directions.
4) Ensure that your baby’s diet is kept free from traces of eggs. This should be followed in case your baby has an allergy to eggs.
It is more important to ensure you follow this step during and immediately after any allergic reaction to eggs.
5) In case your baby displays any symptoms of anaphylaxis, call an ambulance immediately and rush with your baby to the nearest hospital emergency for treatment.
In such cases, it is advisable to use epinephrine injection on your baby while waiting for the ambulance.
Prompt usage of an epinephrine shot is essential for preventing serious complications and even death.
